Word Lab
Literacy practice that strengthens phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—helping students build the foundations for stronger reading.
Explore Word Lab ↗I’m Mikael Barnheart, a Kansas middle school special education teacher and the creator of Mr. B’s Learning Labs. I believe students deserve engaging resources that build foundational academic skills while respecting their age, interests, and potential.
In a middle school classroom, a student may need practice with foundational skills while still wanting to feel like a middle school student. Finding resources that offer both the right level of support and an age-respectful experience can be a challenge.
I created Learning Labs to help bridge that gap: approachable practice, clear directions, and meaningful opportunities to experience success. The goal is to help students strengthen skills without making them feel defined by what they find difficult.
Students bring different strengths, needs, and starting points to learning. Learning Labs is built around that reality, with a focus on accessible practice, manageable steps, and confidence that grows through progress.
Each lab supports a different part of a student’s development:

Explore Life Lab ↗Learning Labs grows from the practical needs of real classrooms. As a special education teacher, I know the importance of clear instruction, flexible support, and resources that make foundational practice meaningful for older learners.
My aim is to create tools teachers can use to support individual needs, encourage independence, and help students see their own progress. The labs are a growing collection shaped by classroom experience and a commitment to making learning more achievable.
Meet students where they are. Respect who they are. Help them discover what they can become.
That mission guides every lab: build skills, protect dignity, and open doors to what comes next. Every learner deserves the chance to grow with confidence.
